🌻Impressions on Mourning Classmate Tianhuai🌻
By Wu Yuntang
Yesterday afternoon, I went to Changzhi Funeral Home with Han Linmu and Chen Guoxiang to pay tribute to and bid farewell to my classmate Guo Tianhuai, who had passed away just the day before. Overwhelmed by grief, I was filled with emotions and couldn't help composing this clumsy poem:
Linmu, Guoxiang, and Yuntang,
Went to the funeral home yesterday.
We presented a wreath and lit incense,
To send Tianhuai off to paradise.
More than ten classmates in Changzhi,
All grieved for Tianhuai.
They all wanted to come out to bid farewell,
But their bodies failed them.
Some had bleeding in their eyes,
Some stayed in bed all day.
Some suddenly got joint pain,
Some had backaches and felt flustered.
Some had stomachaches in recent months,
Hardly eating half a jin of grain a day.
What's more, we are all in our octogenarian years,
Helpless and frustrated, with the will but no strength.
In such a way to mourn Guo Tianhuai,
Only three of us made it to the scene.
Tianhuai's son and daughter,
Stayed in the mourning hall, so desolate.
Seeing their father's classmates come,
They were moved, tears filling their eyes.
Though only three came,
It's better to come than not.
They opened their mouths and called us uncles,
With sorrow written all over their faces and tears streaming down.
Facing Tianhuai's three children,
The three classmates spoke up.
We all said Tianhuai was a good man,
Jinfeng and he were schoolmates.
He and Jinfeng formed a happy marriage,
Their marital happiness was unmatched among classmates.
Who wouldn't praise such a loving couple?
With grandchildren all around, they lived a joyful life.
Though he has now passed away,
He lived to a ripe old age in his octogenarian years.
Especially since his children and grandchildren are promising,
His life was not in vain.
The children were touched after hearing,
Thanking us uncles for the kind words.
Tomorrow, father will be cremated,
The day after tomorrow, they'll send him back to his hometown.
Linmu, Guoxiang, and Yuntang,
Shook hands and bid farewell at the funeral home.
We fulfilled our friendship on behalf of all classmates,
With no regrets, we can sleep soundly in life.
