Love Letters Through Four Seasons
By Hometown's Passion for the Land
When spring cherry blossoms fall into your hair
I pick up the fingerprints of the wind
You say petals are letters the sky never sent
And our silence
Is spring folded inside the envelope
Cicadas brew summer nights on grape trellises
Your fingertips slice the sweetness of iced watermelon
As stars plunge into the galaxy of your eyelashes
I taste it—
The warmth of light landing on my tongue
Autumn, where ginkgoes cut sunlight into gold coins
We walk through the street, crunching fallen leaves
You pick up the yellowest one and say
This is time's postmark stamped on the earth
And the lines of your palm
Are warming all the words I never spoke
A silent snowfall morning
The white mist you breathe out drifts over my name
Footprints wind into a river under streetlights
Like two streams thawing
You say winter is the world's blank space
And our meeting
Is fate's cinnabar seal
Turns out eternity was never a grand proposition
It's the crisp crack of spring cherry blossoms breaking through winter
The sweetness of melon juice spilling over fingertips
The crackling oath of autumn leaves burning
Beneath the snow
Two heartbeats
Growing roots in silence
Notes
1. Fingerprints of the wind: The wind's flow is visualized as "fingerprints," emphasizing its uniqueness (as irreplicable as fingerprints) and the tenderness of capturing fleeting spring moments, mirroring the perception of subtle beauty between two people.
2. Letters the sky never sent: Petals are metaphorized as unsent letters, endowing natural scenery with the imagery of human communication. It fits spring's theme of "sprouting" and hints at unspoken affection between the two.
3. Brew summer nights: "Brew" compares the continuous chirping of cicadas to the fermentation of wine, reflecting the length of summer nights and the gradual mellowing of sweetness over time.
4. Warmth of light landing on my tongue: Synaesthesia blends the visual "starlight" with tactile "warmth" and taste "sweetness," intensifying the sensory fusion and heartache felt in each other's presence on summer nights.
5. Gold coins of autumn: "Gold coins" metaphorize the golden glow of ginkgo leaves in sunlight, highlighting the preciousness of autumn light and implying time is as valuable as treasure.
6. Time's postmark: Fallen leaves are likened to postmarks (marks on letters indicating time and place), transforming natural phenology into a testament of time. It echoes "the lines of your palm warming unspoken words," deepening the autumn theme of emotional accumulation and affirmation.
7. Sweetness of iced watermelon: An iconic cool summer image—"iced" brings tactile refreshment, "sweetness" a direct taste. The juicy sweetness of sliced watermelon mirrors the warmth of summer nights, metaphorizing pure, refreshing joy in each other's company. This sweetness, beyond mere flavor, is the gentle touch of mutual companionship, grounding love in everyday warmth.
8. The world's blank space: "Blank space" (an artistic term for unmarked areas in a painting) describes winter's starkness, contrasting with their meeting as a vivid mark, emphasizing love's brilliance amid simplicity.
9. Cinnabar seal: A traditional red stamp used in calligraphy, painting, or contracts, symbolizing the solemnity and eternity of love, endowing their meeting with fated certainty.
10. Breaking through winter: "Breaking" disrupts winter's stillness, referring both to cherry blossoms' vitality piercing cold and love's power to overcome barriers and awaken life.
11. Growing roots: Eternity is visualized as roots taking hold, emphasizing love is not fleeting splendor but a quiet, deepening bond stretching through years, like roots embedding in life.
