吴冠中(1919年8月29日-2010年6月25日),笔名“荼”,江苏宜兴人,毕业于巴黎国立高级美术学校,中国当代著名画家、美术教育家、散文家,“法国文艺最高勋位”和“巴黎市金勋章”得主,二十世纪现代中国艺术的代表性人物之一。

吴冠中1950年回国后,先后任教于中央美术学院、清华大学建筑系等学院,并担任中央工艺美术学院教授、中国美术家协会常务理事等职。曾出版过《吴冠中素描、色彩画选》《吴冠中中国画选一辑》《东寻西找集》《吴冠中散文选》等文集。他终生致力于油画民族化及中国画现代化之探索,独创的“彩墨画”独树一帜,其著有油画作品《长江三峡》《北国风光》《鲁迅的故乡》等,水墨画有《休闲》《幻影》《梦醒》和《巢》《朱颜未改》等。吴冠中画作《交河故城》被学术界认定为其一生艺术造诣的里程碑,曾拍卖出4070万元人民币的天价,创造了中国在世艺术家全球最高成交纪录。2010年6月25日吴冠中在北京医院病逝,享年91岁。
吴冠中与朱德群和赵无极被誉为“留法三剑客”。他的夫人是朱碧琴女士。
后世纪念
2010年8月29日,清华大学美术学院与人文学院联合成立了“清华大学吴冠中艺术研究中心”。该中心致力于对吴冠中的艺术作品和思想进行国际化的学术研究,旨在全面梳理和探讨吴冠中在艺术生涯、创作历程以及对中国当代美术所做出的贡献,服务于文艺界、教育界及社会各界。
2015年9月19日,在张家界国家森林公园举行了吴冠中铜像的揭幕仪式,以纪念这位杰出的艺术家。
2020年3月20日,为了纪念吴冠中逝世十周年,中国邮政发行了《吴冠中作品选》特种邮票一套,共6枚。这套邮票由王虎鸣,邮票印制局的副总设计师设计,并由北京邮票厂采用胶版工艺印制。邮票图案包括“高粱与棉花”、“瓜藤”、“水巷”、“巴山春雪”、“鹤舞”和“双燕”。这套邮票的面值总计为9.60元,发行量达到了780万套。

Chinese modern painter and art educator
Wu Guanzhong (August 29, 1919 - June 25, 2010), pen name "Tu," a native of Yixing, Jiangsu province, is a graduate of the National Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris, a renowned Chinese contemporary painter, art educator, essayist, winner of the "Highest Honor in French literature" and the "Golden Medal of the City of Paris," one of the representative figures of modern Chinese art in the 20th century.

After Wu Guanzhong returned to China in 1950, he taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Department of Architecture at Qinghua University, and served as a professor at the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts and a managing director of the Chinese Association of Painters. He has published collections such as "Selected Drawings and Color Paintings by Wu Guanzhong," "Selected Chinese Paintings By Wu Guanzhong" and "Selected Proses by Wu Guan Zhong." He devoted his life to exploring the nationalization of oil painting and the modernization of Chinese painting, and his original "color ink painting" was unique. He has created oil paintings such as "The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River," "Northern Country Landscape," "Lu Xun's Hometown," and ink paintings like "Leisure," "Unreal Image," "Wake up from Dreaming," and "The Nest," and "Beauty Hasn't Changed." Wu Guanzhong's painting "The Ancient City of Jiaohe" was recognized by the academic community as a milestone in his life's artistic accomplishments. It once sold for 40.7 million yuan at auction, creating the world's highest transaction record of a living Chinese artist. Wu Guanzhong died at the age of 91 at Beijing Hospital on June 25, 2010.
Wu Guanzhong, along with Zhu Dequn and Zhao Wuji, were known as the "Three Swordsmen Who Studied in France." His wife is Ms. Zhu Biqin.
Remembrance for future generations
On August 29, 2010, the School of Fine Arts and the School of Humanities of Qinghua University jointly established "Qinghua Wu Guanzhong Art Research Center." The center is dedicated to conducting international academic research on Wu Guanzhong's artistic works and ideas, aiming to comprehensively comb and explore Wu Guanzhong ‘s artistic career, creative journey and contributions to contemporary Chinese art, serving the arts, education and social sectors.
On September 19, 2015, a bronze statue of Wu Guanzhong was unveiled in Zhangjiajie national forest park to commemorate the outstanding artist.
In order to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Wu's death , on March 20, 2020, China Post issued a set of special stamps entitled "Selected Works of Wu Guanzhong," a total of 6 pieces. The set of stamps was designed by Wang Huming, deputy general designer of the stamp printing bureau, and was printed by the Beijing stamp factory using the offset process. The stamp designs include "Chinese Sorghum and Cotton," "Melon Vines," "Water Lane," "Ba Shan Spring Snow," "Crane Dance" and "Double Swallows." The stamps have a total face value of 9.60 yuan and a circulation of 7.8 million sets.
