回顾逝去的往昔 我又一次不由感到诧异，
一回想起 我的那些青春花季，
我便记起 有人曾送给我们的一叠旧衣，
也会记起 妈妈曾如何化破旧为神奇。
那些旧衣五颜六色分外花哨 每一件也都非常瘦小，
而我当时正缺少一件外套 恰巧彼时深秋即刻来到。
妈妈遂将旧衣缝制在一起 何其巧妙，
缝合起每一件 都带着她爱的味道。
她为我打造好 一件五彩斑斓的外套，
为此我感到 如此之自豪。
她边给我讲她读过的一则圣经故事 边缝制着外套，
她讲到 约瑟夫也曾穿过一件多彩外套 然后她说道：
或许这件外套 也会让好运与幸福常常将你环绕。
我已是迫不及待地想穿上那外套，
妈妈又以一个吻为其向上天祷告。
我的五彩斑斓的外套 纯系妈妈为我所打造，
虽说只以旧衣为原料 但我穿上它何其自豪。
尽管我们为金钱所困扰 但我足以堪称精神富豪，
只因我的五彩斑斓的外套 纯系妈妈为我所打造。
于是虽然裤子上遍布补丁 两只鞋子上也千疮百孔，
穿上我五彩斑斓的外套 我还是匆匆起身赶往学校。
结果却只遭到 其他人对我的一片冷嘲与轮番取笑，
他们嘲笑 我穿着妈妈为我打造的五彩斑斓的外套。
而我对此感到莫名其妙 因我感到我堪称精神富豪。
我对他们说到 妈妈在每个针脚 都缝进了爱的味道;
也跟他们讲到妈妈给我缝制之时 所讲的整个故事，
以及我五彩斑斓的外套缘何其实
比他们所有人的衣物更富有价值。
但他们对其感到莫名其妙 而我竭力想让他们知道：
只有当一个人选择甘于贫穷 他才会是真正的贫穷。
如今我知道 我们虽曾为金钱所困扰，
但我当时仍足以堪称精神富豪——
只因我的五彩斑斓的外套 纯系妈妈为我所打造——
纯系只为我量身而打造。

Although we had no money, I was rich as I could be

So with patches on my britches, Holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors, I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing and making fun of me
In my coat of many colors my momma made for me
And oh I couldn’t understand it, For I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love my momma sewed in every stitch
And I told them all the story Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes
But they didn’t understand it And I tried to make them see
