In the 'Dragon Year' Envisioning Fortunes change with the wind, as the rabbit departs and the dragon arrives. Soon, it will be the traditional Chinese Year of the Dragon, and our Dragon Year Asian Art Exhibition is about to open.
The 'dragon' is a highly artistic mythical creature. With a long, coiling body like a serpent, a head resembling a mix of a horse and an ox, cartoonishly round eyes, powerful talons resembling eagles, fish-scale-like textures on its body, whiskers resembling catfish, and antlers atop its head, it is truly a creation filled with artistic imagination and creativity. Using the concept of the 'dragon' in the exhibition title not only signifies the Year of the Dragon but, more importantly, reflects the spirit of human creativity. China's 'dragon,' Egypt's 'Sphinx,' Assyria's 'Lamasu,' and ancient Greece's 'Griffin' and 'Siren' together form humanity's oldest art: mythology. Without the creativity of art, mythology loses its charm.
The 'dragon' holds special meanings and qualities. Throughout history, the dragon has been a symbol of auspiciousness, joy, hope, and soaring in Asian culture. Therefore, the image of the dragon is pervasive in ancient Asian art, from architecture, ceramics, and precious metalware to clothing, accessories, and even children's toys. Through art, these auspicious meanings convey people's expectations and aspirations for a better world, filling our world with warmth and hope.
The 'dragon' is a highly popular symbol not only in Asia but worldwide. Its artistic nature and unique meanings attract people from different cultural backgrounds. According to Pew Research Center data, the United States has approximately 24 million Asian Americans, constituting about 6% of the population. Asians have made significant and important contributions to the United States and the world. The status of Asian civilization in world civilization is foundational. Asian inventions, silk, porcelain, and Southeast Asia's maritime hubs have influenced global discoveries and international trade significantly. All of this explains why the 'dragon' and the 'Year of the Dragon' from Asia are highly valued in North America and worldwide, symbolizing the driving force of civilization development.
The United States is an immigrant society, and every American or resident has dual identities: legal attributes and cultural identity based on ethnicity. Therefore, the U.S. is a society that advocates multiculturalism, forming the foundation of its development. The artists participating in this Dragon Year Asian Art Exhibition embody the diversity of cultural backgrounds. These artists come from all corners, residing in the greater New York area, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese artists. Chinese artists include those from mainland China, as well as ABCs (American-born Chinese) and individuals from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The artists' works span various art forms, including painting, mixed media, photography, installations, and new media. There are globally renowned successful artists, innovative art explorers, and young art school students. The diversity is reflected in both the forms of art and the age distribution of the artists.
I believe that hosting such an exhibition not only promotes mutual exchange among Asian artists but also fosters understanding between Asian and other culturally diverse backgrounds, fostering interethnic and intercultural interactions. Of course, I sincerely hope that this exhibition brings diverse exchanges to our multicultural-based community. Many thanks to Culture Lab and the Overseas Chinese Artists Association for providing us a platform. May we have a more beautiful 2024 as the traditional Year of the Dragon approaches.
