If I Encounter You in Xinjiang
By Wang Wei(China)
Tr. Wei Hongxia (China)
For a thousand years, I stand like the lonely diversifolious poplar. There're no wind nor smoke in Taklimakan Desert. Even when I shed the last drop of tears, I would clean my body in the Peacock River. Bathed in the sunshine, I look forward to your return so that you can take a look at me in the boundless wilderness if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
I was reincarnated into ice and snow at the top of Tianshan Mountains aeons ago. Let the crescent moon give light to wherever you go, compose a song of love, plant ninety thousand roses in Nalati Prairie, let the stars light up the sky over Bayanbulak Grassland, display a thousand cups of wine in Fruit Valley, and then get drunk with you in Sayram Lake. Don't wake up if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
I cut Tianshan Mountains into two halves, leaving one half to the wind and the other to the snow. Let's drive through eighty-one bends of Duku Highway like birds. Birch trees stand like guards of honor, cattle and sheep come into our view, and my love has already been as barren as a disaster at that oasis. The sea of flowers is the place where your soul settles down if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
From now on, I'll grow into the highest peak in this land, standing in the Pamir Plateau to capture your ogles, your heartbeats, your loveliness, your loneliness, and the spring breeze you bring me, kneading you into a poem, melting you in my surging blood, and shivering with the spring tides. Even if I died tomorrow, I would love you as much as before if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
I have myself weathered into wastelands and wait for you when you float across the sky. I'll watch for your beauty all my life in the open fields of Lop Nor. Who is tied to the wind and sand of this life, all the bustling and floating dreams, and the view of your back when you fly swiftly like a swan goose? I've been waiting for this encounter for ten thousand years if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
There's no sea that can hold my solitude. I run like mad in the desert, on the snowy mountain, in the grassland, around the lake. The wind blows all the way and the answer lies in the sky. In a red dress, leaving your redolence in scalding Kanas Lake in autumn, you walk towards me with a smile. Leaning against the railing, my beauty amazes the hill and the rill. Today, I won't meditate on human but miss you in my heart if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
I chop wood, feed horses and build a Mongolian yurt in Hemu village where there're floating white clouds, enchanting green mountains, and flowing streams. I wash away your travel fatigue with the snow water from Tianshan Mountains and pluck a snow lotus flower to dress up your bright blooming period. The place where wisps of smoke from cooking rise is the bridal chamber I prepare for you. I watch you lovingly until you're sound asleep and press time if I encounter you in Xinjiang.
If I encounter you in Xinjiang, I'll take you to Ili in spring and the lavender diffusing scent is the wedding gown for you.
If I encounter you in Xinjiang, I'll take you to Hami in summer where I grow the sweetness of Hami melons for you.
If I encounter you in Xinjiang, I'll take you to Tacheng where the fallen leaves on the border will redden your mood.
If I encounter you in Xinjiang, I'll take you to Lake Uren in winter where lamb stewed with fish is the prelude of my cooking for you. Embracing you warms the white snow and I kiss you for a century.
If I encounter you in Xinjiang--
