W.H.奥登(Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907-1973)是公认的现代诗坛名家，奥登1907年出生在英国，1946年成为美国公民。他充分利用英美两国的历史传统，作品的内涵因而更深广。“奥登”（Audun）曾在冰岛的传奇故事中出现过，而奥登的写作，尤其是诗歌的写作技巧，深受北欧主要诗歌派别的影响，被公认为艾略特之后最重要的英语诗人，也是著名的同性恋者。他46岁的时候开始和18岁的诗人Chester Kallman相恋，1973年奥登在维也纳死于心脏病。

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.
How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
