Chang Ge Xing
A Han Dynasty Folk Song
Translated by Ken Fan
Such a lovely garden with mallow greens,
Morning dew awaits sunlight and gleams.
Balmy spring spreads nature's bounty,
Everything glows with prosperity.
Grief is often felt as autumn draws closer,
Leaves will turn yellow and then wither.
Rivers all proceed eastwards to the ocean,
How could each course be reversed to its origin?
Prime years squandered as a young adult,
Will be regretted in vain when he's old.

No Title
By Ken Fan
Longevity of a golden turtle is due to living idle,
Tender flowers are meant for a prompt spoil.
Vexed most is the Moon at sunset,
Wishing nightly for clouds to dissipate.

Reef
By Ai Qing
Translated by Ken Fan
One wave, after another,
Ceaseless hitting and pouncing.
Each one splashes at its foot,
Into foams and dispersing.
...
Severely scarred,
Are its body and face.
Staying erected with smile,
Out into the sea, it gazes.
