Stories Told by Buddha

Once upon a time, there was a scholar who met a girl, engaged to her in private and decided to spend the rest of his life with her. On the wedding day, however, the woman married to another scholar and became the bride of someone else. Terribly hurt, the scholar, from then on, developed a strong hatred to this woman and finally became very ill, lying in bed for many years.
One day, a traveling buddhist monk happened to pass by his house. Seeing the scholar was so miserably induldged in the lost love, he resolved to relieve him of the bitterness and pain. The monk came to his bed and asked him how it happened. Then the monk drew a mirror from his bosom and handed it to the scholar. He asked him not to speak a word, just to watch the mirror carefully.
Suddenly, the scholar saw, by the boundless sea, a naked woman lying dead on the beach. Someone passed by her, took a look, shook his head, and went away. Then another man went by, but he took off his coat, put it on the dead body and went away too. At this moment, a third person came to the same spot; he walked to the woman, took a look, and began digging a hole. finally, he carefully burried this female corpse!
The scholar got quite bewildered at the sight. Then the monk explained to him "The female corpse on the beach is your fiancee's previous life. You are the second person to pass by and gave her a coat. She was just returning you the favor at her this life. But what she would eventually repay is the man who had buried her, the man who is now her present husband. Though you were destined to meet but you were not destined to marry. Your love story must come to an end." Hearing this, the truth finally dawned on him and, all at once he recovered from his illness.
