Wind and Rain at Midnight
By Sama Zhonghua (China)
Tr. Jinghao (UK)
Wind and rain have a covenant for thousands of years.
When has it been missed by you? Or by me?
Behold—
The wind is blowing over the rolling Miluo River.
A real man doesn’t worry about his life, only
Wishes his State’s worry and troubles be gone with the wind,
And wishes the rain come to clear away the haze of Chu State,
Bringing all blooming flowers and flourishing tangelos.
The Monarch reigned in his royal court,
Qu Yuan didn’t bear the worldly.
So many lofty aims of his ended in vain
With grief and indignation in twists and turns,
And his loyal soul changed into sword-shaped calamus leaves*.
Every year, people offer him sacrifices in the Dragon Boat Festival.
With a pot of clear wine accompanied by a Lisao Lament,
Listening to the wind and waiting for the rain —
I am sleepless.

Note: * A calamus leaf is in shape of a sword, therefore calamus is also known as Pujian meaning calamus sword. During the Dragon Boat Festival days in the past, calamus leaves were always hung beneath the door lintel of each house, because the ancient people believed that such leaves could frighten ghosts and eliminate evil spirits.(吴伟雄注)
