Dear audience, dear Chinese friends,
In 2009, invited at the Qinghai International poetry festival I mentioned in my speech “Poetry, redressing the unbalanced”, that a good poem can offer wisdom and knowledge, it can escape from chaos and emptiness, it can give voice to the deepest of human feelings, it can give sense to a life or solace when a beloved life has gone.
A good poem can be a vehicle of culture, of meditation about the self and the world. Unfortunately, the majority of contemporary poetry appears to be fragmented, afloat and in search of itself. One could blame it on the absence of former strict poetic styles which forced the poet to think and to use all his linguistic skills - skills he doesn’t need in free verse. But a great number of famous poets, especially in the first half of the former century proved that excellent poetry does not need the corsage of a sonnet or any other determinant poetic form although one neither should forget the words of the wises poets and philosophers of the past. Not only the Greek, the Romans and the Chinese respected and honoured poets and philosophers, also the Germans –Dichterund Denker– put their poets and philosophers on the same high level which nowadays have been replaced by soccer players, extravagant movie stars and the glitter of fake gold.
Many years ago, invited as guest poet at an international poetry congress in Korea with late Alan Ginsberg, the famous Russian poet Voznesenski and the Chinese poet BeiDao (whose English was quite poor at that time, so I read his paper for him), the Korean Minister of Culture compared in his inauguration speech poetry with a firefly and pretended that poetry, fragile and small, but giving so much light, should be protectedlike precious old buildings, the way UNESCO does: it should be classified as a World Heritage. Poetry is a bridge, a precious link not only to the past, but also to the future. Oscar Wilde criticized that nowadays the people know the price of everything, but the value of nothing. Greed and egoism have replaced the ancient values, especially in the so-called New World.
It is therefore that ten years ago I started the project Poem of the Week, a poetic, human bridge. Modern, international poetry, translated and published every week in more than 20 languages. Having met last year at the Shanghai International Poetry Festival, Anna Keiko, president and founder of Huifeng, I proposed to promote with Huifeng in Chinese this internationallygreatly appreciated project.
I therefore wish to express my great gratitude to all members of Huifeng for sharing and promoting this humanitarian project so that also in China, cradle of the world’s greatest philosophers and poets, the light of poetry, that small firefly, may offer wisdom and humanity.
